THE FIRST STEP

You know when you’re on a plane, about to take off, and the flight attendants are explaining the emergency procedures? I love the part where they tell you to put your own oxygen mask on first before helping someone else. From en emergency procedures standpoint, this is necessary because you’re not going to be much help to that child who needs assistance with his mask if you’re gasping for air yourself. So it goes with genius. Your primary obligation – to yourself, your colleagues, your friends, and your family – is to take care of your own needs first in order to be most useful and valuable to them.

From a strictly practical perspective, the best way to do this is to feed your genius first. That means spending time on your own edification and growth Before you do a single other thing in your day. So in other words, you don’t reach for your smartphone first or dive into email before you focud on your self. Instead, get up an hour early with the express purpose of investing in your genius assets – stimulating your curiosities, stretching your intellectual or creative reach, taking a brisk walk around the block to fill your lungs with the fresh air of a new day, listening to music that inspires you, thinking about color or light or anything that interests you that is outside of the ”what you do” scope of your day.

These are coices people! Every day is filled with dozens of exciting choices most of us simply don’t make. Or to be precise, we make choices, it’s just that they’re often likely to be the choices that will de-genius us (ahem, NCIS). Things to read, see, listen to, taste, do – they’re out there, and they will grow your genius.

Steg 1: Morgonritualen. Att investera tid i mig själv innan jag gör någonting annat. Att göra val som bygger upp, istället för att pausa eller riva ner. Val grundade bara i mig.

“Be soft in your practice. Think of the method as a fine silvery stream, not a raging waterfall. Follow the stream, have faith in its course. It will go its own way, meandering here, trickling there. It will find the grooves, the cracks, the crevices. Just follow it. Never let it out of your sight. It will take you.” ― Sheng-yen quoted by Thomas Moore in "The Soul’s Religion"
